My name is Bo Sanchez.

Perhaps you know me—I’m the author of 30+ books and preach to thousands. I’ve also built many non-profit organizations and started many profitable businesses.

A lot of people have come up to me and asked, “Bo, why are you so successful in life? Do you have a secret you’d like to share with me?”

Yes, I do have a secret. A lot of people miss this very important secret—and that’s the reason why success is so elusive for them.

Here’s my big secret (that’s not really a secret—because it’s soooooo simple): The reason why I’m successful in life is because I’ve got MENTORS. I seek them out. I pursue them. And I learn from them like a sponge.

In fact, I’ve got Mentors in every area of my life. I’ve got a mentor for my spiritual life, another mentor for my health, another mentor for my businesses, and another mentor for my investments. And yes, I’ve got a mentor for my married life.

Today, I’d like to introduce you to my great mentor for my marriage. I owe a lot to this man who—even when I was still single—was already inspiring me to have a great marriage by the fantastic example of his own marriage.

As a single man, I told myself that if God ever called me to marry, I’d be a great husband as he is to his wife.

Believe me, after 15 years of being married, I’m still trying.

Because my marriage mentor is a tough act to follow.

My marriage mentor is none other than Pio Espanol.

Let me tell you who he is… (You’ll be surprised by his story.)

When I think of Pio Espanol, I think of God’s Power.

You see, many years ago, Pio was a hopeless womanizer.

Though already married and with three kids, Pio had various girlfriends in different parts of the country. He was unfaithful to his wife and proud of it.

Expectedly, his marriage was falling apart.

But at the verge of separation, God came into the picture and intervened…

It all started when Pio’s boss invited him to a prayer meeting. Obviously, everything in Pio rebelled against the idea. Religious stuff is for sissies. That’s the most uncool thing you can ever do.

But it was his boss who was inviting.

And he couldn’t say no.

That boss was my father. And that prayer meeting was our little Light of Jesus prayer meeting in our small garage.

In that prayer meeting, God hit him on the head.

Pio woke up and changed his life forever.

Immediately, Pio worked on his marriage. He prayed for God to heal the wounds of the past. He prayed that his wife Bebot would forgive him and regain her trust in him.

By God’s power, his marriage was renewed. And for 30+ years now, his renewed marriage has inspired so many other couples to find love again.

Since then, God has used Pio to build Light of Jesus all over the world. He has preached all over North America—Canada and the US—and all over Asia—from Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Hong Kong…

But aside from his global ministry, Pio has a special love for renewing marriages. I don’t think he can count the thousands of marriages that he has saved and strengthened because of his ministry.

To get to know him more, I interviewed my marriage mentor. Be inspired by our short conversation below:

Bo: How did you become a great husband?
Pio: It didn’t happen overnight. I’m still working on it. One day, when I was already counseling a lot of people, Bebot told me, “I wish I was just one of your counselees.” I asked why, and she said, “Because you’re so kind and gentle with your counselees. But when I have a problem, you’re so tough and harsh towards me.” Boy, that really woke me up! Today, I’m trying to be gentler towards her than anyone else.

Bo: That's encouraging for us to hear.  That's the reason why you're such an effective teacher on family life, because you also share your failures.  So you mean you and Bebot still fight?
Pio:Yes, we do! And I’ve learned to ask forgiveness quickly so our conflicts don’t last. That’s the husband’s job—to say sorry.

Bo: What other things do you do that makes your marriage work?
Pio: Every week, my wife and I talk, watch a movie, have fun. My week won’t be complete without our romantic date together. We hold hands a lot. I give her tiny gifts. We laugh a lot. She’s really my best friend.

Bo: How do you remain faithful to her now? How do you fight temptation?
Pio: Having a great marriage is my best defense. But I also do other things. For example, I don’t counsel a woman alone. If a woman wants to talk to me for counseling, she’ll have to talk to my wife and me together. That protects me a lot. And as much as possible, I always bring her along with me in my preaching trips.

Bo: Your kids say you're a great father.  Why do they say that?
Pio: I’ve disciplined them a lot but I made them my first priority. And we spend an enormous amount of time together. You see, I’m a husband first, a father second, and a leader third. If I keep those three in that order, I’ll be successful as husband, father, and leader.
